During our research on instagram, we came across a series of photos that lit our hearts. Those audio cassettes that accompanied our childhood and adolescence. let’s play the video and the magic begins. experimentation, vintage, modern … then in the pious I discover that Emi is Italian like me. My chest swells with pride and now I would like to share what I found out about him and a series of questions we asked him.
Emiliano Melis is @emymelis a music designer and producer based in New York City.
His works are a mix of noise, melody, tape loops and improvised electronic sounds. A fusion of classic analog synthesizers and contemporary digital instruments.
Over the years he collaborated with many musicians as a remixer and producer, and with international artists as a composer for videos and sound installations in Europe and the US.
He also composed music for short movies, TV shows and theater performances.
I started making music when I was a teenager. I’ve always been focus on creating and experimenting with sounds and instruments. Music became immediately my personal tool to express myself.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
It’s always difficult to catalogue what we crate. My background is various and it ranges from rock to electronic. Sometimes I like to call it “ambient experimental”, even if I’m not really sure what that means.
What is your creative process like?
Everything starts with an idea for a melody or a beat. Once the music direction is clear in my mind, I start with the longest process of searching for the right sound for each part.
I spend a lot of time working on my synths. I’m very meticulous so every step of my creative process is complex and intense. Sometimes seems a neverending session and the hardest moment is to decide when the track is ready.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Trent Reznor and IAMX.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Back in the days the internet revolution changed profoundly the music business especially for who like me started making music in the 90′. New technologies were growing so fast and the change was inevitable. I think at the beginning the impact was unsettling and the streaming changed the rules of the game, mostly for major labels, but at the same time I believe the digital era gave us more new possibilities.
What’s next for you?
I’m very busy working on my new solo album and hopefully it will be released very soon. Meanwhile I’m having shows and writing new songs with my band ECHO OF THE GHOST (www.echooftheghost.com
